Abstract

This study aims to elaborate the discourse on the struggle for interpretation of the Sunnah. To analyze the discourse, this research uses a hermeneutical and historical approach. The results of this study show two things: first, through the mapping offered by Daniel Brown, it can be seen that the construction of the Sunnah was born and grew in a complex manner. At the beginning of its existence, the Sunnah was understood flexibly in the religious minds of early Muslims. However, along with the codification process, the Sunnah was limited to a more standard and narrow space, namely only as a mere hadith. Second, the interpretation of the Sunnah is ultimately not only contested in the formative period of Islam, but also in the modern era. The modes of modern scholarly thinking on the Sunnah are actually a re-examination of the classic feuds of the past. To address this, Brown offers an alternative path; back to restore the Sunnah in a flexible position.
